The SFZH Initiative sponsored a Conference on Information Society, Media and Democracy in San Francisco.

Mass media and democracy cannot be separated in modern societies. The political process can be regarded as closely intertwined with all kinds of public communication. Over the last decades, public relations has not only developed as one of the most important fields of communication research, but the numerous links between journalism and political as well as organizational communications have gained importance for both sides.

The Presidential elections 2004 and the coverage by the media illustrated the growing importance to better understand the structural links.

The San Francisco - Zurich Initiative decided to enable the Stanford University and the University of Zurich to call for a conference on Information Society, Media and Democracy. The two Departments of Communication will second their scholars for a one day debate, together with other prominent speakers. The former US Ambassador to Switzerland, Dick Fredericks opened the Conference, held in San Francsico on December 2, 2004 at swissnex. The event was open to the public.
